Hotel Radisson Blu Style Vienna

Design hotel at the Herrengasse entrance, art deco meets modern - steps from the Hofburg.

Our verdict

In this selection, the Radisson Blu Style is the value pick of the five-star segment: a design house in a former bank building on Herrengasse that starts surprisingly moderately for the most central location in the city. Dark wood, brass and good beds instead of imperial plush - the house proves that luxury in the first district does not have to cost grand hotel rates.

About the hotel

In a former bank building on Herrengasse, with dark wood, brass, indirect lighting. Rooms are minimalist, beds are good. Location is dead-central: Hofburg, Graben, Stephansdom all walkable. Breakfast above average, the Sandbar busy in the evenings.

Location: 1st district (Innere Stadt). The first district - UNESCO World Heritage, St. Stephen's Cathedral, Hofburg, Albertina. Stay here for postcard Vienna.

Who is it for?

You get five-star design in the heart of the first district - a fair rate for this location, sitting in the upper mid-range of the Vienna market. The house suits couples and city travelers who care about interiors, good beds and an above-average breakfast, and anyone who enjoys ending the day at the hotel bar. Families with children, or travelers who need space and their own kitchen, will be better served by an apartment hotel.

What works

  • + U3 Herrengasse right outside, with Hofburg, Graben and Stephansdom all walkable
  • + Above-average breakfast buffet with a good reputation
  • + Coherent art deco design in a former bank building instead of chain uniformity
  • + The Sandbar is a proper hotel bar, busy in the evenings
  • + A five-star address in the Innere Stadt without the grand hotel premium

What to weigh up

  • − No dedicated hotel parking - only the public Freyung garage remains
  • − Minimalist rooms: if you expect imperial five-star splendour, the reception is sober
  • − No family concept - for children or space needs there are better houses
  • − The surroundings are quietly refined at night - the wrong base if you want nightlife on the doorstep

Location & getting there

Herrengasse is one of the most refined addresses in the old town, and this is exactly where the Radisson Blu Style sits - in a former bank building between the Hofburg and the Freyung. The U3 station Herrengasse is right outside, while Graben, Kohlmarkt and Stephansdom are a few minutes on foot, the Hofburg even closer. Essentially everything you want to see in the first district is within walking distance. From the airport, take the CAT or S7 to Wien Mitte, then the U3 straight to Herrengasse with no further change. There is no hotel car park, but the public Freyung garage is close by.

Getting around from here

Herrengasse subway (U3) approx. 1 min on foot
Hofburg approx. 3 min on foot
Stephansplatz approx. 8 min on foot
State Opera approx. 10 min on foot
Central Station approx. 20 min by transit
Vienna Airport approx. 35 min by transit

Rounded estimates from our location analysis - actual times vary by route and time of day.

How the price compares

For a five-star house on Herrengasse you pay comparatively little, and the concept explains why: design, a good breakfast and location instead of suite space, spa and butler service. If you equate five stars with the full imperial programme, you will notice the difference immediately. If you want the address and can do without the pomp, this is the better deal.

Currently from €250 per night, which places it in the priciest third of our Vienna selection (rank 21 of 25 by lowest rate). In the 1st district, the median entry rate across our picks is €518.

Know before you book

  • The breakfast buffet is considered one of the house's strengths - the breakfast rate is genuinely worth it here
  • Arriving by car: budget for the Freyung garage in advance, Herrengasse itself is a pedestrian and residents-only zone
  • Small pets are allowed for a fee, but only on prior request
  • Room categories differ noticeably in size - for stays over two nights the next category up is worth it

Highlights

  • Set in a former bank building on Herrengasse in the old town
  • U3 subway stop Herrengasse right outside the door
  • Sandbar with a solid cocktail list
  • A few minutes' walk to the Hofburg (Imperial Palace) and the Stephansdom (St. Stephen's Cathedral)
  • Design-led interiors with Art Deco references
